Monday Mar 23rd – Roman Holiday

We have spent the last two days in Rome reliving some of the memories of our honeymoon. We have a very nice hotel very close to St Peter’s Basilica. We have walked around most of the famous landmarks in Rome and were engulfed by the Rome Marathon which consumed the city on Saturday. It was a huge event with many road closings and thousands of runners in the race. We fly home tomorrow and are anxious to get back and see our family. We have definitely hit the wall on travel fatigue, but it has been a fantastic trip. Time to go home.

The Ponte San Angelo across the Tiber River

The Marathon of Rome was an exciting event with thousands of runners

The race hit most of the famous areas of Rome, like Piazza Navona

The race finished at the Roman Colesium

The Pantheon is an amazing Roman architectural triumph, being built over 2000 years ago

The Trevi Fountain was undergoing major repairs

... but we still managed to get a 'selfie' picture

The monument to Victor Emmanuel II is an overwhelming structure

The many Roman ruins take you  back thousands of years to the golden age of the Roman Empire

The Colesium is under some major repair work

There are many Basilicas in Rome which are so beautiful

But the biggest and most important one, of course is St Peter's

We stood in line for about 1 hour to get into St Peter's, and had time to get another 'selfie'

The church is a massive structure with a massive front yard

... which was being set up for Easter services

The interior is massive in scale compared to other Basilicas

 Everything is over sized

... and the artwork is so beautiful

... including Michelangelos famous Pieta sculpture

The famous Swiss Guards are on duty protecting entry to the Vatican property

Saturday Mar 21st – Farewell Dear Lucca, Farewell!

Today we leave Lucca to drive to Rome to drop off our car and spend three days before flying home on Tuesday.  Today is a very sad day for us. We have come to Lucca four times in the past six years and each time we have been mesmerized by its beauty and charm. People ask us “why do you keep going back to Lucca?” It’s very hard to put into words the feeling we have when we are here. It is so special. The narrow, quaint streets, the piazzas, the churches, the restaurants and cafes and the wall are all so charming and give us such a sense of peace, joy and total relaxation; that we want to return. There are so many things we love about Lucca. It’s the perfect place to park yourself and experience the Tuscan life around you. Here are just a few pictures of that life.

The wall is so unique and such an integral part of life in Lucca

We tried to walk it every day

Lucca has some incredible architecture

Everywhere you look you see such beautiful buildings

We really enjoyed eating breakfast and lunch on our terrace

There are so many good restaurants in Lucca.
One of our favourites is Rusticanella, which serves traditional Tuscan fare

Or Buca di San Antonio where had out farewell dinner last night

The churches are spectacular and are filled with the beautiful art work

The carousel in Piazza Napoleone was a favourite with the children

We enjoyed so many terrific lunches sitting outside in the sun during our travels

... and drinks in the amphitheatre

There are so many historical places to visit in Tuscany

We went to our favourite cafe, Moka Bar, for our twice daily fix of cappuccino

We loved the Puccini concerts put on in Lucca

...and finally we loved the wine of Tuscany
